Superposition In an undeformed sedimentary sequence, older layers are generally below younger layers.

Cross-cutting A fault or intrusion must be younger than the rocks it cuts through.

Unconformities An erosional surface records missing time between older rocks below and younger rocks above.

Geological thinking One clue rarely tells the whole story. Build the sequence from several independent relationships.
