A complete sediment transport and deposition investigation.

Sediment Sorter uses a simplified virtual river flume to investigate how moving water transports, sorts and deposits gravel, sand, silt and clay.

Students begin with controlled comparisons, changing flow speed, channel slope and sediment supply while recording what the model actually shows. They then connect those observations to bedload, saltation, suspension, deposition and erosion.

The later tasks shift from process to interpretation. Students build a layered sedimentary record, attempt to create an erosion surface and use the resulting evidence to reconstruct a plausible sequence of changing river conditions.

Coastline Paradox asks students to measure the same model coastline with different ruler sizes and explain why the answer changes even though the coastline itself stays fixed.

Students compare Smooth, Rugged and Very rugged coasts, quantify scale sensitivity and use evidence from the interactive to connect measurement scale with map resolution and coastline complexity.

A maths extension introduces the power-law relationship between ruler size and measured length, including an estimated fractal dimension and optional log–log interpretation for stronger groups.
